President Museveni speaking at the commonwealth heads of government conference on reform of international institutions in London re-affirmed that the current global food crisis is a blessing rather than a curse for countries like Uganda.

He mentioned that the problem has always been selling the food to global markets. “We produce 10 million metric tonnes of bananas but 40 percent rots because we have nowhere to sell it”

The rice eating populations should quickly learn to start eating bananas as there is plenty in Uganda now. A typical person in Uganda, consumes more than 550 pounds of bananas a year.

Museveni is his speech mentioned that he hoped that the current global food crisis would prompt wider trade reforms. European countries should remove restrictive tariffs and subsidies to allow fair competition on the global market paving way for better trade and economic growth.

The meeting was chaired by Prime minister Gordon Brown and attended by leaders of 10 other commonwealth nations.
