1216477984veep_lRTkX_16419In Uganda, it has been silently known deep down by most Ugandans, especially since, the president scrapped the presidential term limits, that President Yoweri Museveni would want to stand again and again until he dies. It is the silent fear that so many citizens have been feeling which was confirmed by press reports over the weekend. And what better person than his close ally and vice president to break the news: Museveni to stand in 2011 - Vice President Gilbert Bukenya

“The President called me to Kisozi and while there, I noticed that the man is still very strong. So, why should we let him go? Let us support him. Let us support the NRM so that we continue in power,” Bukenya said amidst thunderous cheers from his audience which included over 200 National Resistance Movement (NRM) executive members.

Not only Museveni’s critics are alarmed but many people are, especially considering what is happening around in nearby Kenya and Zimbabwe.

Many NRM historicals are already voicing their dissatisfaction and frustration with their party leadership, most recently, Tom Butime quoted saying “I think if the party wants to survive it must change. If it has to change, it has to change everything. It has to change leadership. If the party doesn’t change, we shall lose out because people will get off and at the end of the day, when they become many, they will come back and overthrow our own organization.”
President Museveni is the chairman of the NRM party who will seek party leadership which will allow him to stand 2011.

With so many of his close friends and colleagues, finally, gathering the courage to call for a change in leadership of the country - maybe then, the president would listen and return the country towards a democratic path.
