“If he (Mugabe) loses elections he must go. How can you stay without winning elections? It’s impossible,” President Museveni sharing his views on the crisis in Zimbabwe on the BBC’s Network Africa program. This negatively compares to his own comments during the 2006 presidential elections where he reportedly said “revolutionaries do not leave (state) power like chicken thieves”, a statement clearly indicating that he would not leave power once he loses the popular vote.
After President Museveni holding onto power for over 21 years and claiming nobody else has a vision to lead the nation, there would be no need to have a flawed election if people elected you. There would also be no need to change the country’s constitution to scrap presidential term limits just before the election date.
Leaders in Africa have to realize the true meaning of democracy. Their governments should genuinely be elected by the people, run by the people’s views and for improving the people’s lives. That way, President Museveni’s statement would hold perfectly, “As long as the people are elected, I don’t really think the issue of who leads is crucial”

Apparently there is another Mugabe waiting to be identified as one, and thrown out before he starts shedding the blood of those who speak out for democracy. There is an urgent need for the African Union to take up the task of teaching what is ”Democracy” to the leaders in the continent.

I more than agree with you, Paulraj! Since the youth are the future leaders, maybe African Union (AU) should start a project teaching the future africans democracy. I dont believe individual african leaders can be good examples to their citizens. I love this statement: this world will be a better place when power belongs to those who don’t need/want it.

Well, before saying anything Museveni should think whether its worth or not. here question is, does election matter for Mugabe? is he liable to accept People's verdict? If he would have cared about the people's opinion, he would have been out of power long ago, Zimbabwe would have not been in crises, there had been no economic woes, no human rights violations... leave it list will go on and on. he is hell bothered about people, that is why he is a despot.

the whole Africa is full of dictators. democracy a far dream will remain the same for long time. Ok let us take the other side of the coin. SA where there is democracy but still what is happening in the country, we all know. if there is democracy in any of African nations, its either partial or rather failed or dictatorship. this is African choice of Govt. At the end I would maintain that they are tortured and crushed by the brute rulers only coz they have allowed themselves to.

Robert Mugabe is trying to whip up paranoia by making statements like if the MDC comes to power then it will hand over Zimbabwe back to the 'white oppressors' against whom the Zanu-PF fought a bloody battle to wrest power. There cannot be a more ridiculous statement that this.

I have a feeling that the real power behind Mugabe is the top brass of the Zimbabwean Army. Who knows may be the old man really is tired and wants to quit but is being intimidated not to do so by shadowy powers behind him. Else, how can he make a statement like the 70s veterans asked him if they can pick arms against. Arms against whom? Their own countrymen who voted for a change?

I wonder how the presidential run-off polls would be free an fair when the air is of mistrust, intimidation, threats, detentions etc. The elections would have no legitimacy. What is the United Nations doing? It's a good sign that many African leaders have called Mugabe to ensure that the elections are free and fair and he should accept whatever the result is.

It was heartening to see that Botswana became the first of Zimbabwe's neighbours to have warned Mugabe. This shows some courage and conviction by the Botswana government that should serve as an eye-opener to semi-tyrants like Thabo Mbeiki.

Why is President Museveni coming out with strong statements now? What was he doing before? It took once Botswana to show the leading light. Major countries surrounding Zimbabwe like Uganda and South Africa, especially the former did a very poor job. Still better late than never.

This doesn't make any sense unless something serious is done against the despotic regime of Robert Mugabe. An armed intervention would be a good option keeping in view that unlike Iraqis who lived in perpetual fear of Saddam, the common Zimbabwean might actually welcome them with open arms. This would also mean violence, but some objectives are worthy enough of some bloodletting.

To solve the Zimbabwean crisis is very easy. Elect McCain to power, brainwash him that the Mugabe regime is anti-Christ he visits witchdoctors making Western leaders who are against him like Bush and Blair sick. He will immediately train all his guns against him. That way Zimbabwe will be liberated from the brutal dictator. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When everything is said and done, I empathize with the common Zimbabwean on the streets. Whether you talk of military intervention or not, someway somehow, lives will be lost and property destroyed. Why does one man’s ego cause a whole nation to suffer? Isn’t there a way all this madness can be put to rest once and for all? Who can actually safe the hungry / poor / orphaned child, the crying mothers, the impoverished Zimbs? Most importantly, where is the United Nations?
